picture of my great grandmothers, Amelia Maria Carter on the left and
Mary
Eliza Barker, probably when they were at the Providence Conference Seminary
(later
called East Greenwich Academy) in East
Greenwich, Rhode Island. The information on an 1867 letterhead (click here
to see the illustration of the building) said it "Furnishes sound
instruction in the Languages, Mathematics, Sciences, English Branches,
Drawing and Painting, a Commercial College Course and a Course in
Music. A Home School for both sexes, at rates within reach of the
people." Amelia graduated in 1865. They both taught before marrying.
Amelia's daughter Kathrine
May Kennedy married Mary Eliza's son William Anthony Sherman.In
March of
1996 I "found" via the Internet Bob Carter, a third cousin. We are
related
through Amelia Maria Carter. After she wrote by hand 147 pages of
Carter
genealogy in the notebook that Bob's family has, she made several more
copies; two of which are in my mother's family. Visit Bob
